NEW YORK (CBS New York) – – Chanukkah came a bit early this year for one Borough Park family.
On Monday, Israel Pinter was handed the keys to a custom van for his son Alter, who at age 12 lost both legs, and nearly his life, after a battle with a bacterial infection and a case of swine flu.
The van was presented to Israel and Alter by Assemblyman Dov Hikin and representatives from Bay Ridge Toyota.
“I have the keys for a new Toyota Sienna LE,” a jubilant Pinter told 1010 WINS reporter Steve Sandberg.

Specially equipped for Pinter’s wheelchair bound son, the $50,000 vehicle was donated just in time for the holidays.
For Alter, getting life back to normal has been a struggle. Everyday tasks like getting in and out of the car became a chore, but not anymore.
“He struggled for months. He was on the respirator, he was almost not here. It’s just a miracle he’s here now,” Pinter said.
Pinter was grateful for the grand gesture. “From the bottom of my heart, I really thank everyone,” he said.
